What is a Community Education Council?
CECs (Community Education Councils) offer parents the opportunity to support and impact education at the district level.
CECs are education policy advisory bodies responsible for, among other things, reviewing and evaluating their district’s educational
programs, approving zoning lines, and holding public hearings on certain matters.
The powers and duties of Community Education Councils are specified in NY State Education Law §2590-e:
Community Education Councils (CEC's) have 11 voting members:
- Nine elected parents of current Pre-K–grade eight students in public non-charter schools within the Community School District
- At least one must be the parent of a student classified as an English Language Learner either currently or within the previous two years
- At least one must be the parent of a student with an IEP
- Two members are appointed by the Borough President, who either live or own a business in the district and
- One non-voting high school student.
CECs hold at least one meeting per month with the community superintendent, open to the public, where the public may discuss the current state of the schools in the district and hear a report from the district leader.
CECs have to submit an annual evaluation of our community superintendent to the Chancellor.
CECs provide input to the Chancellor and the Panel for Educational Policy on district concerns.
CEC members serve as liaisons to School Leadership Teams as well as District Leadership Teams.
CECs participate in Joint Public Hearings on school closings and co-locations.
CECs hosts Town Halls with the Chancellor.
